Public consultation of the working document “assessing the efficacy and safety of silage additives”

Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 on additives for use in animal nutrition includes in its scope the group of silage additives which were not specifically included as a group in Directive 70/524/EEC concerning additives in feedingstuffs. Currently, no specific guidelines for the assessment of this group of products exist at Community level.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has been requested to give technical assistance to the European Commission by producing a guideline regarding the safety and efficacy of silage additives. Within EFSA, this task was assigned to the Scientific Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP).

This document is intended as the basis for an annex to the “Commission Regulation on implementing rules and guidelines concerning applications for authorisation of feed additives in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003” containing specific guidelines for the assessment of the efficacy and the safety of silage additives. This Regulation is still in the process of preparation, and therefore this draft annex may have to be modified according to the final structure and content of the Regulation.

EFSA and the FEEDAP Panel decided to consult interested parties before the final adoption of this document. The outcome of this consultation will be taken into account during the final adoption of this document by EFSA’s FEEDAP Panel.
