Stakeholder workshop on the re-evaluation of food additives

EFSA is organising a one-day stakeholder workshop on the status of the EU re-evaluation programme of food additives.

The workshop will be an occasion for taking stock of the programme’s progress, analysing the challenges encountered so far, and promoting examples of good collaboration. It will also serve as a platform for discussing EFSA’s upcoming work and the challenges to be faced over the coming years.

Participants will have ample opportunity to share their views and make suggestions on how to strengthen scientific cooperation and engagement with EFSA in the specific area of food additive re-evaluations. They will also gain a better understanding of the follow-up activities resulting from certain safety concerns or data gaps identified in an assessment.

Under Regulation EC 1333/2008, EFSA must re-evaluate by 2020 all food additives authorised for use in the EU prior to 20 January 2009.

Regulation EU 257/2010 establishes a programme for the re-evaluation of approved food additives, including deadlines for the re-evaluations for the different groups of additives (e.g. food colours, sweeteners, preservatives and antioxidants, and miscellaneous food additives).

For effective re-evaluations, it is critical that EFSA receives scientific data (e.g. on chemical and biological properties, toxicological studies and levels in food) from additive producers, food processors and other interested parties (e.g. national authorities, research institutions, and academia). Engaging all interested parties is therefore vital to the completion of the safety assessment of food additives, and ultimately to the protection of consumers across the EU.

The workshop is open to the whole range of stakeholders having an interest in the re-evaluation of food additives. Participation is limited to a maximum of 90 participants. Participants will be selected to ensure a sufficient representation of the various stakeholder groups, as well as a broad geographical balance.

The workshop will be preceded by an open plenary meeting of EFSA’s Scientific Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources added to Food (ANS). Registration for the two events is done separately.

Registration will close once the maximum number of participants is reached or, at the latest, by 6 November 2017.

After closure of registration, potential participants will be informed whether or not they have been selected.

Date and venue

The meeting will be held in Parma, Italy, from 09:30-16:00 on 24 November 2017.

The venue and logistics will be communicated to selected applicants after closure of registrations.
