Protocol published for sodium DRVs

EFSA has finalised the protocol it will use to establish dietary reference values (DRVs) for sodium. The protocol, which is available on EFSA’s Knowledge Junction platform, was completed following a public consultation.

The protocol will determine how EFSA’s nutrition The science of how diet relates to the body's need for sustenance. experts select and use evidence in their assessment. It will be applied to the sections of the scientific opinion Opinions include risk assessments on general scientific issues, evaluations of an application for the authorisation of a product, substance or claim, or an evaluation of a risk assessment. covering: the assessment of possible relationships between sodium intake The amount of a substance (e.g. nutrient or chemical) that is ingested by a person or animal via the diet. and health outcomes; and the integration of different lines of evidence for setting DRVs.

As well as comments on the protocol, the consultation also generated valuable feedback on the draft version of the scientific opinion.

A second public consultation will be held in 2019, when the final draft of the scientific opinion is ready.
